I think Katherine just has a different way of getting the best out of me and I love applying myself to the different style of climbing I find outdoors and also taking in a lot about the history of it all. <image:caption>The awesome Katy Whittaker has the same ‘gear’ thing as me i.e. she likes to be really well equipped and organised. That is not saying she can’t be bold (look at her list of E8s). We both enjoyed a great day up at Cloggy luxuriating in screwgates, cams and wires. No one was there to judge ‘how much we had’. Anyway, we carried it up there!! Check out my instagram for the day I paid a large price for being under equipped due to someone else’s ‘gear standards’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Trust</image:title>
<image:caption>Poseidon Adventure E4 6a, Northumberland. I really trusted my own way on this route. The technical crux of this route is the handful of moves reaching for the horizontal break (pictured), from which a ground fall is guaranteed. But for me the crux was mental - getting to start of crux. I placed gear low down (this is not the usual way to do it - in fact I think most people just solo the whole thing), because I knew that if I could just safely get to the base of the unprotectable crux moves I trusted I would climb it. It has good memories and it was a route I desperately wanted to do. I knew too, just a few months later there would be good chance I would be pregnant (I was) and getting myself into these kind of positions might never happen again. So far I’m right on that!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Trust</image:title>
<image:caption>Salmon Left Hand E6 6b, Bamford Peak. I did not trust myself on this route, and I’ll just have to sit with that one! This is from just over 15 years ago (!). The day before this photo I’d onsighted two E4s at the crag and was feeling good. I decided to try and onsight this route. Having completed the crux I got to the point here in the photo and froze. For some 20 minutes…. It was getting colder and colder and darker and darker and I couldn’t commit. The small crimp that I’m eying up was for me just a couple of centimetres out of reach. I knew I just had to weight that left foot and go dynamically for the top. I couldn’t. If only I could have let the body climb! Too concerned that I might fall badly, I asked for a rope. With one hand I tied in and climbed to the top. I had to be content with the headpoint pictured here the next day. And yes I do seem to have chalk all over my cheeks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Personal Coaching - This is the sort of knowledge and advice you can't get from a book…</image:title>
<image:caption>…so definitely book some time with Katherine if you want some sage, personalised advice to improve your overall climbing game. Had a few sessions with Katherine over the winter to try and hone and refine my usual home-brewed training plans, and it has most definitely paid off. Katherine helped to massively simplify and target the training to the right elements for me, and it is really showing in both the average and max grades I am now climbing, as well as improvements in endurance and route management. <image:title>Personal Coaching - Katherine’s approach gave me a new perspective and confidence that I never thought possible.</image:title>
<image:caption>For the first time, I didn’t feel super tense, panic or feel the need to over-grip. This was truly groundbreaking. You may think I’m exaggerating, but trust me, I’ve gone through a few coaching sessions to deal with my fear, and nothing worked until now. This on the other hand was transformative. <image:title>Personal Coaching - “The session with you really gave me a massive boost in confidence…</image:title>
<image:caption>… to pick out my routes, assert what I wanted to do and start requesting soft catches. I really didn't realise my fear of vertical lead falls stemmed from years of hard catches. That soft catch you gave me really helped me pin point that fear and articulate what I needed to the belayer. So it really did help me have a healthy base to build from. {In our group} we are having these conversations and making adjustments now, and I think it's helped the whole group as we're getting a much healthier culture of feedback/checking in/saying what you need.” Naomi Sport climber</image:caption>

As parents, we really value the way Katherine always manages to get the best out of Finn, even when he doesn't feel that he is climbing as well as he would like. It is clear to us that Finn is a much more well rounded climber today than he would otherwise be and it is always lovely to see how inspired he is after another session on Peak limestone or grit.” Ellie & Simon</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - Climb Free is a 6 week online and in person course.</image:title>
<image:caption>The course supports you to meet your stress, anxiety or fears and gives you a process and range of tools for you to feel comfortable in your climbing. You’ll also learn a clear process for how to fall safely with confidence and good judgement. You’ll learn a lot about yourself and your relationship with climbing too. There are no short cuts with this, but if you bring intention, patience and curiosity, I will guide you every step of the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - “The day after the course finished I onsighted my hardest route to date…</image:title>
<image:caption>… more importantly I had the confidence to tie on and try it. I suspected that my fear of falling, even indoors on closely spaced bolts was holding me back more than deficiencies in technique or strength and sure enough Katherine has confirmed it! There’s a reason the course is the length that it is; there are some habits that need unpicking for this to be a long-term solution.” Nick Essex</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - “The Climb Free course has helped me realise my potential.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Since applying what I have learnt on the course I can now climb right up to my physical limit on onsight attempts, moving well and making good decisions despite being pumped out of my mind. Katherine’s approach to understanding how and why you climb and how your own nervous system is tied in has made me fundamentally change my approach to climbing. This has led to less fear, more enjoyment and ultimately what every climber wants, bigger grades! Ian Milton Keynes</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - I’m Katherine</image:title>
<image:caption>A fluctuating confidence and a fear of falling has reared its head over the years in my climbing. I know what it feels like to be strong, fit, have good technique and then know the mind is getting in the way. Sometimes I felt brave and on it, other times I did not. The unpredictability was almost as bad as the tricky emotions. When the stress took over, I would back down, deal with negative, spiralling thoughts and be unsatisfied with knowing I just hadn’t given it my all or even just not get on a route all together. Worse still, sometimes I avoided climbs altogether. It’s been a personal mission over the years to resolve it in myself. And also my clients. Over the 20+ years I’ve been coaching I’ve seen stress and anxiety manifest in many different ways in my clients. After years of working with people on this topic, it’s clear everyone needs a slightly different approach and also it cannot be approached alone; there are far more factors going on in a climbing day than just you and your mind.</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - “I was amazed at how well and free of fear I climbed on my first day out on the rock this spring.</image:title>
<image:caption>It was one of those afternoons climbing that I will remember and return to in my mind because it felt great. When I analyzed this feeling I realized that I had created this environment that enabled me to climb well. I think Climb Free is a great name for your course. Because it’s so much more than dealing with a fear of falling and fall training, it’s about learning about all the factors that can affect your performance on the day. So with that awareness you can begin to CLIMB FREE!” Caro France</image:caption>

<image:title>Climb Free - “Climb Free was extremely valuable for me. “</image:title>
<image:caption>It helped me to evaluate my motivations for climbing and gave me a clear way forward in tackling my fear of falling. The group setting was great. My fear always made me feel alone in a sport which can often feel macho and praises people for being bold. The group discussions and Katherine helped me to realise that everyone gets scared, it’s more about how you can deal with it.” Carys Sheffield</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the course I was able to identify various elements that were feeding my fear of falling. <image:title>Climb Free - “I believe this course has helped me enjoy climbing a lot more. “</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s changed the way I feel about my whole climbing experience. I’m more aware of thoughts and feelings while climbing and in my everyday life. It’s given me the tools to challenge my inner voice and be positive about falling and managing injury/training/partners. Katherine and my fellow climbers were very supportive throughout. <image:caption>- Anyone who feels their stress, anxiety or fear of falling is getting in the way of their climbing - Anyone who wants to understand more about themselves and their psychological approach to climbing (where your fear of falling is just a niggle) - Indoor & outdoor route climbers - This course sets a foundation for any kinds of climbing, but some of the exercises may be best applied indoors to begin with</image:caption>

I believe I learnt/ discovered something else, just how hard I can try if you want it, it's ok to drain the tank. How big the tank is. <image:title>Training plan - “I am finding the programme fun, challenging and engaging.</image:title>
<image:caption>The variety of on the wall exercises make the plan easy to stick to and fit in with the busy life of someone who wants to spend her time outside a demanding full time job climbing, not whiling hours away in a gym lifting heavy weights. The plan is easy to tailor to different levels of ability and to what your individual goals are with specific exercises for different types of climbing holds and styles. The plan still allows you to climb socially whilst working through drills, taking care of you as a whole person. Finally, the plan is great value for money at a third of the cost of other plans on the market. I'm really excited to get to week 12 and see how different I feel as a climber.” Tasha, trad climber</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Endurance and Power Endurance sessions are great, and why I never thought to introduce the resting, clip pauses and body positioning elements before I just don’t know, really obvious when you think about it. I also really like the efficiency & skills drills/training particularly the accurate feet - I thought I had good footwork until I started to do the drill and really looking and trying to make a one time placement every time and no adjusting - it’s a very real surprise.” Andy, sport climber</image:caption>

<image:title>Training plan - Goal setting</image:title>
<image:caption>Many people struggle with goal setting – it’s important and I want to help you here. The more specific you can be about your climbing goals, the clearer you can be on the types of moves, techniques and holds you need to work on. The plan includes question prompts to help you think about your own climbing, your goals, where you are now and how to record your progress.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training plan - It’s not just about the physical training…</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m pretty sure you know that. It’s also about technique, tactical & mental aspects that are so vital to route climbing. I wanted to create a plan, which means you’ll know how and when to work on these aspects alongside the physical training so you can hit the ground running at the end of your plan.</image:caption>
